Insurance Plans Benefits
One initial visit is covered by your health insurance benefits, along with up to eight additional visits that can be arranged in any combination of prenatal and postpartum support. This includes essential support during labor and delivery, which encompasses scenarios such as stillbirth, abortion, or miscarriage. Additionally, up to two extended three-hour postpartum visits can be provided after the end of a pregnancy.
Doula services coverage includes various types of support, such as perinatal guidance, health navigation, and evidence-based education on prenatal, postpartum, childbirth, and newborn/infant care. Doulas also offer vital lactation support, assistance in developing a birth plan, and connections to community-based resources. Furthermore, this coverage includes comfort measures and physical, emotional, and other nonmedical support provided during labor and delivery, as well as during miscarriage and abortion.
However, it is essential to note that certain services for pregnant or postpartum members are not covered by health insurance plans. These non-covered doula services include belly binding (traditional/ceremonial), birthing ceremonies (like sealing or closing the bones), group classes on babywearing, maternal or infant massage, still and video photography, placenta encapsulation, shopping, vaginal steams, and yoga. Doula services do not encompass the diagnosis of medical conditions, provision of medical advice, or any type of clinical assessment, exam, or procedure. Nevertheless, doulas are not restricted from teaching free classes available to individuals, including Medi-Cal members to whom they are providing doula services.
